Type of Travel

  • Although DIY is possible, use of tour operator is recommended when doing a safari because the parks are so huge, you need a skilled wildlife spotter to see animals and find your way around
  • Tanzania has plenty of tented camps and lodges in midrange and luxury levels in the safari parks
  • Budget accommodation when doing a safari is more expensive than options in Kenya although public camping sites are available
  • You can easily plan your Zanzibar trip via DIY. It is very accessible with plenty of accommodations you can book via online booking sites
  •  It is required by law to use a guide when trekking Mt. Kilimanjaro

Least Favorite

  • Police officers in the city, particularly in Arusha, are notorious (they try to find fault in petty things for a bribe).
  • Traffic in Dar Es Salaam
  • Compared to the vibrant city of Nairobi, there’s nothing much to do in Arusha, the safari take-off point for the Northern Circuit (most popular)
  • We didn’t find the local food options to be as diverse and unique tasting (mostly beans and meat)

Planning Your Trip

BUDGET

Around 1,500-2,000 USD per person for 7 days all-inclusive tour, lodge, meals for mid-range rooms for a safari. Price is the same for Kilimanjaro Trekking.

ITINERARY SUGGESTION

Allot at least 6 full days and include at least 3 parks  to get a better variety in your safari. You need at least 4 full days in Zanzibar alone. Kilimanjaro is a minimum of 7 days to reach the top.

BEST TIME TO TRAVEL

The best time to go for a safari and in general including Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro is off-season around September or October unless seeing the Great Migration.

Destination to Combine Before or After Safari

Serengeti Park

With a very varied landscape that encompasses a vast savannah, hilly woodlands and scenic open grasslands, Serengeti National Park persists to be at the forefront of Tanzanian destination. Its sweeping vistas, natural dramatic feature and world-class wildlife concentration make it a photographer’s paradise and a traveler’s dream-come-true.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Whether you’re aiming to snap breathtaking shots of this snow-capped towering beaut or you’re planning to trek it up to its summit, Mount Kilimanjaro never disappoints. It is Africa’s highest mountain and the world’s tallest free-standing mountain. For climbers, you can choose from at least 7 routes – all beautiful in its own way. For non-climbers, you can always enjoy the view, experience the wildlife surrounding it and take photos to memorialize its magnificence.

Zanzibar Island

For a holiday in the tropics or an interesting historical and heritage tour, Zanzibar is always a good idea. The island covers a vast and scenic spread of white sand beaches, gorgeous coral wilderness perfect for snorkeling and diving, and a myriad of places for sightseeing and historical visits. This is also a perfect place to cap off any safari trip.
